Interspecific hybridization occurs in several groups of waterfleas in nature. Often the hybrid clones can be locally more abundant than the parent taxa. Hybridization has likely formed polyploid and diploid species. The role of hybridization in contributing to the diversity of benthic and littoral zone waterfleas remains poorly studied.
